Yet another find at Crater of Diamond State Park, 2.01 Ct. Yellow Diamond found
Featured
Crater of Diamond State Park is 911 acre Arkansas State Park in Pike County, Arkansas. Out of this 37.5 acre which is world’s only diamond bearing site open to public. More than 75,000 diamonds have been discovered in the field since 1906 which includes worlds only perfect diamond discovered, the Strawn-Wagner Diamond.
It was a lucky day for Mr. Dean Filppula, an offshore steward from Shreveport, LA who visited the park during vacation after a rainstorm. He found “wedge-shaped light yellow stone about the size of an English pea” in the West Drain area of the park. He is calling this 2.01 Ct diamond after his mother’s initials as “Merf Diamond”.
Park interpreter Wayman Cox says Mr. Filppula was at right place at right time. It rained heavily before his visit, which washed loose soil from surface uncovering the large yellow gem. His store is very familiar to many visitors in past who have found diamonds.
Mr. Filppula found his 20th diamond, but it is largest one found so far in 2015. He is planning to sell the diamond.
California man pays $4.8M for 26 cents from 1792

Kevin Lipton submitted a winning bid of $2,585,000 mid-January for the 1792 penny, one of about only 10 coins that were “experimentally produced” after the U.S. Mint was established.
Lipton, who owns a coin wholesaling business in Beverly Hills, was searching for the penny, called a Birch Cent, since he saw one in 1981 at a New York auction house. The coin was bought by a developer for a mere $200,000.
“It’s like our very first penny,” Lipton said. “It’s such a spectacular coin. It’s so important, so rare.”
The piece features a profile of a female face encircled by the words “Liberty Parent of Science and Industry.” The other side says, “United States of America” and shows the denomination of “One Cent” within a wreath. At the bottom is the fraction “1/100.”
According to the Reporters, Lipton’s bid is the most money ever paid for a one-cent coin. “They are a great store value, and will only be worth more in the future,” He said about his purchase. “They are literally Mona Lisas of our coinage.”
Lipton’s 1792 “Wright Quarter” is special because it’s America’s first quarter and because the only other example known to exist is in the Smithsonian. It features a beautifully executed profile of a woman with the word “Liberty” written atop and the date below. The reverse side has an eagle standing on a globe with the words “United States of America” surrounding it. The coin was designed by Joseph Wright only one year before his death.

Blue Diamonds sets record for price-per-carat sale
Featured
Sotheby’s auction creates a new global record for highest price of any blue diamond as well as sets a record for price-per-carat for any diamond which is $3.3 million per carat. A presale estimated $10 to $15 million blue diamond ended up at whooping total amount of $32,645,000 after intense bidding from even prospective buyers. The gem eventually went to a Hong Kong private collector’s inventory. Hong Kong collectors are constantly active in the world jewelry market.
The vivid blue diamond is of 9.75 carat with exceptional purity of the blue with no other colors. It also has the very high clarity to all other blue diamonds which contain imperfections due to crystal formation.
The gem belongs to the collection of heiress Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, who died earlier this year. She was the widow of philanthropist and horse breeder Paul Mellon. Sotheby’s New York continues the auctions of the Mellon Collection through Sunday.
118-mn-yr-old dinosaur tracks found in African diamond mine
Featured
Researchers have found nearly 70 tracts of 118 million year old dinosaur, crocodile and large mammal in the Catoca mine in Angola. It also show a mysterious raccoon-sized animal, during a time when most were no larger than a rat. They also found 18 sauropod tracks, with a preserved skin impression.
All the tracks were found in a small sedimentary basin, formed about 118 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous, in the crater of a kimberlite pipe, researchers said.
“These tracks are unique because they are the first vertebrate fossils ever found from the inlands of Angola,” said researcher Marco Marzola of the PaleoAngola Project. “All the other vertebrate fossils on Angola were found on the coastline.”
The Catoca Diamond Mine, the world’s fourth largest diamond mine, had stopped mining for almost eight months to preserve the findings and make the study possible.
The tracks are sent to the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, for preservation and study. Soon they will return to Angola. “Everything belongs to that nation and its heritage,” Marzola said. “This is very important to underline.”
November Birthstone
Featured
Topaz
Topaz, November’s primary birthstone, has one of the most confusing histories. The name is thought to have come from an island, Topazos, in the Red Sea, where both Topaz and Citrine were found. Since the two gems were alike in color they were often mixed up.
It’s known for its alleged healing properties. Topaz is reputed to increase understanding, strengthen breathing, prevent colds, enhance creativity, bring relaxation, control angry passions, restore energy, and aid in tissue regeneration.
Citrine
Citrine is the yellow variety of quartz, with the color ranging from a pale yellow to golden, through bright orange to a dark reddish-brown orange (called “madeira).
It’s name was derived from the Latin word citrus, meaning “citron”. This gem combines a warm, attractive color with good wearability and a modern price- an unbeatable combination for many jewelry buyers.
