JEWELRY CARE
BACK

At KeepSakes Jewelry and Gifts we want your jewelry to last a lifetime. In order for that to be possible, you must take care of it. There are many things you can do to prevent jewelry from getting damaged.

  • It's always best to wait until after you have finished showering, putting on your makeup, perfume, and hairspray before putting on your jewelry.
  • Try to protect any jewelry from scratches, sharp blows, harsh chemicals, and extreme temperatures. Store your jewelry separately so it doesn't scratch other jewelry.
  • Never wear your jewelry while swimming. The chlorine can cause damage to various gemstones and gold.
  • When doing household work always remove your jewelry, rings especially.
  • If you have bead necklaces such as lapis or pearls, store them flat since silk stretches over time. DO NOT store pearls in a plastic bag!
  • Sterling silver will polish up by rubbing or buffing it with a polishing cloth. If you store silver in a plastic bag with an interlocking seal, it will be less prone to tarnish.
  • Be certain that stones mounted in rings are not loose or rattling. The prongs of a ring can and do wear down. If the prongs wear down too much or break you can lose your stone. Prongs are easily "re-tipped" by most jewelers to keep the stone secure.
  • Avoid storing your jewelry next to a heating vent, window sill, or on a car dashboard. Store jewelry away from prolonged, direct sunlight as the sun may fade the gemstones.
  • Bring your jewelry to KeepSakes regularly to have it checked for wear to prevent further damage.
  • Some stones are softer than others and therefore easier to scratch. Hardness is based on a gem-trade standard called the Mohs scale. The higher the Mohs scale number, the harder the stone is. The highest Mohs scale rating is 10. Diamonds are a 10. Anything with a Mohs scale rating of less than 7 is easily scratched such as coral, lapis lazuli, opal, pearl, and turquoise. Gold, silver, and platinum are only Mohs 2-1/2 to 4. Always carefully store any fine jewelry.
